The 2015 Summer Food Program was once again a tremendous success. Through collaborative effort, 500 deliveries were made to community families who needed help with food this summer. The recipient families all have children who benefit from the free/reduced lunch program at school or Head Start during the school months. Deliveries included fresh and local produce that was purchased from TRACTOR or donated by Dig In! Yancey Community Garden; food staples purchased through the Reconciliation House, healthy recipes, listings of area resources, and donated children’s books that were collected by Yancey Library, Blue Ridge Partnership for Children, and Reconciliation House.
Fresh produce delivered this year included: apples, broccoli, bell peppers, cabbage, collards, corn, cucumbers, garlic, jalapenos, kale, lettuce, okra, onions, potatoes, rainbow chard, squash, tomatoes and zucchini.
This is truly a collaborative effort that involves tremendous community volunteer dedication to make happen. Many thanks to volunteers from Reconciliation House, Dig In! Yancey Community Garden, Yancey County Cooperative Extension Office, Blue Ridge Partnership for Children, AMY Regional Library – Yancey branch, TRACTOR, Yancey County DSS, Yancey County Schools, Yancey County Transportation Authority, First Baptist Church of Burnsville, and residents of Mountain Air community and the Yancey community at large for providing over 400 volunteer hours. Working together, over 300 Yancey County children received the nutritious food. This program would not have been possible without the generous support from The Yancey Fund and Community Foundation of WNC, and a partnership with Toe River Health District.
